Bootloader bullocks

So I used to have Ubuntu installed on my computer on a second HDD, now I decided to format that drive and install Win7 over it. However, I still get the Grub 1.5 bootloader which gives me "error 17" on startup and I cannot fix that in any way so far. I have XP on my "good" HDD because I was just going to try Win7, but I can't access that without the XP CD or a functional bootloader.
So far I tried bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot and bootrec /rebuildbcd. I can still access Win7 if I use the DVD when I start up my computer.

check the boot.ini is correct (or don't i am not 100% sure that is the solution or the problem but i think i was taught something about it being corrupt)

Got it 90% fixed :P Changed which HDD to boot from, but I don't get the choice of XP.
